Orthodontic Appliances Commonly Used In Our Office

  • Palatal Expander: The Rapid Palatal Expander is attached to the upper molars through bonding or cemented bands and is commonly used to widen the upper jaw. When the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw or when the upper teeth are crowded or blocked out of the dental arch, this appliance comes in extremely handy.
  • Herbst Appliance: An extremely common problem treated by our orthodontic team is the discrepancy that occurs when the upper teeth protrude beyond the lower teeth. Usually this is due to the lower jaw sitting too far back. The Herbst appliance is helpful in harmonizing the upper and lower jaw relationship. The Herbst often helps avoid the use of a headgear.
  • Tongue Thrust Appliance: When a person presses his or her tongue against the front teeth, tongue thrusting occurs. This thrusting movement usually happens when swallowing, speaking, or resting the tongue. If thrusting is consistent, it can cause problems with teeth alignment and will need to be fixed. The tongue thrusting appliance helps us correct tongue thrusting and is fixed behind the upper front teeth.
  • Thumb/Finger Appliance: While thumb sucking is a natural reflex that relaxes and comforts babies and young children, it should be addressed if it persists after the age of 3 or 4. This is because thumb sucking that continues after the baby teeth are lost can cause improper growth of the mouth as well as misalignment of the teeth. One solution for this is a fixed palatal crib. This appliance is placed behind the child’s upper front teeth and usually stops the thumb sucking habit within a few days.

Hygiene Reminder!

It is very important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen while wearing any of our orthodontic appliances. We want to remind our patients to brush around and underneath the appliance, as well as floss and rinse thoroughly to help remove any food particles.
